Some of the biggest names in the dog world came together at Hartpury University for the inaugural Inside Out Symposium, a groundbreaking event designed to put both canine and human wellbeing at the heart of professional education.

Hosted by Canine Principles, the sold-out symposium welcomed trainers, behaviourists, veterinary professionals and dog welfare advocates from across the UK for a day of science-led learning, meaningful discussion and genuine connection.

Unlike traditional conferences, Inside Out was deliberately designed to support nervous system regulation and deeper learning. Delegates enjoyed smaller breakout sessions, quiet reflection spaces, regular movement breaks and opportunities to connect with fellow professionals in a calm and supportive environment.

The event featured an impressive line-up of expert speakers covering a wide range of topics including canine neuroplasticity, hypothyroidism, canine arthritis, emotional resilience, practitioner wellbeing, dog breeding, neurodiversity, shelter dog welfare and ageing in dogs.

Sessions were delivered by leading figures including Jo Middleton, Dr Nick Thompson, Hannah Capon, Carri Westgarth, Tom Candy, Debby Lucken, Dr Tara Quinn, Samantha Wayland and representatives from Naturewatch Foundation, who presented findings from their latest research into UK dog breeding.

The symposium concluded with a panel discussion from the Canine Principles tutor team, exploring how a deeper understanding of dogs and the people who care for them can transform professional practice.

As well as providing high-quality continuing professional development, the event also raised funds for two charities: A-Law and Naturewatch Foundation.

At the time of writing, the event has raised £1,202 for the charities, with further fundraising planned through the sale of symposium recordings, which will be made available in the coming weeks. All profits from the recordings will be split equally between the two organisations, with dedicated JustGiving pages being established to provide complete transparency.

Jo Middleton, Director of Canine Principles and organiser of the symposium, said: “The connection throughout the day was wonderful. We created a space where people could simply be together, learn together and support one another, while also having plenty of opportunities for movement, reflection and regulation. That felt really special.

“We often talk about the importance of understanding and supporting dogs, but this event recognised that the wellbeing of the professionals working with them matters too. Seeing people engage so deeply with the talks, conversations and each other was incredibly rewarding.

“I’m also delighted that we’ve already raised £1,202 for A-Law and Naturewatch Foundation, with more fundraising to come through the symposium recordings. It means the impact of the event will continue long after the day itself.”

Delegates praised the event’s unique format, which prioritised depth of learning and psychological safety over packed schedules, creating an atmosphere that encouraged thoughtful discussion and collaboration.

Among the organisations supporting the symposium was OxyPet, alongside Animal Focused Alliance and The Pet Business Wellbeing Mentor. Their backing helped make the event possible while supporting fundraising efforts for A-Law and Naturewatch Foundation.

Lindsey John Taylor and Karla Pearson of OxyPet, said: “Supporting the Inside Out Symposium was a privilege for OxyPet. What made the day so meaningful was the atmosphere that Jo and the Canine Principles team created.

“Rather than rushing from one presentation to the next, delegates were given the opportunity to reflect, connect and genuinely absorb the incredible expertise being shared.

“There was a real sense of community in the room, with people united by a desire to improve the lives of dogs and the humans who care for them. The focus on wellbeing, learning and compassion felt incredibly powerful, and we’re proud to have played a small part in such an inspiring event while helping to raise funds for two fantastic charities.”

Following the success of the inaugural event, organisers say they hope Inside Out will become a regular fixture in the canine professional calendar, offering a refreshing alternative to conventional CPD and creating a space where people can reconnect with their purpose, their learning and each other.

For those unable to attend, recordings of the presentations will be available to purchase in the coming weeks, with all proceeds continuing to support A-Law and Naturewatch Foundation.
